E-Learning - COMING SOON!

Here you will find our e-learning platform for all Nightingales who will be taking part in our training. Which will be both e-learning interactive and physical hands on training within our training centres.

Providing clear information, guidance, support and at the heart of it all: modern practical training, by bringing together a variety of different training approaches with real people who have worked in the sector, to realistically discuss and actively train individuals who become, Nightingales.

Nightingales Army active training, accreditation and competency monitoring programme, will be provided before you enter your role as a health care assistant, providing you with clear information and guidance about the job roles available, what qualifications you need to progress within that area, you can have an open discussion with one of our team about these options and we will provide your first professional development plan to follow based on your conversation and decision. From there you will be enrolled in our e-learning where you will begin your care certificate. You will be invited to attend in house practical training within our training centres where you will experience the role of a health care assistant in a simulated, calm, educational, environment. You will have the opportunity to look at the variety of different aids you will see within care homes, community and hospital.

Experience real life scenarios working in groups understanding how to work as a team, completing tasks such as:

Discussions including the human body, skin integrity, hydration, common illnesses, the importance of physiotherapy, mental health, mental and physical well-being. Speaking up. And much more.

All of this will contribute to the completion of Nightingales Army training, along side the care certificate. All Nightingales on completion of training will be provided with certificates of all other training received for own records, this can be used towards a professional development plan and shown to potential employers. Which we can support you to find within your area.

Care Certificate - Skills for care.

The Care Certificate is an agreed set of standards that define the knowledge, skills and behaviors expected of specific job roles in the health and social care. We intend to use the care certificate in our training program because it follows the same values as Nightingales Army. It has been produced to address inconsistencies in training and competencies in the workforce so that people and families experiencing care services can have confidence that all staff have the same introductory skills, knowledge and behaviours to provide safe, high quality and compassionate care of the highest standards. Along side our own practical training we will combine with the care certificate, to standardize the entry qualification into the health and social care sector trough accredited qualification.

The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service

ACAS gives employees and employers free, impartial advice on workplace rights, rules and best practice. The website provides facts and the ACAS code of practice, their phone lines can offer one to one guidance and support. They also offer training and help to resolve disputes. We highly recommend those working in care now or planing a future career in care to sign up to ACAS’s services. They are vital to those working in the care sector who require impartial advice. Some employers may state they will not uphold a third party representative but be aware you are allowed as an employee to know your rights and to be able to access them without detriment.

 

Acas is an independent public body that receives funding from the government.

We provide free and impartial advice to employers, employees and their representatives on:

  • employment rights
  • best practice and policies
  • resolving workplace conflict

When things go wrong, we help to resolve workplace disputes between employers and employees.” ACAS – What do we do.

DSDWeb

We met with Daniel of DSDWEB and were able to discuss training and how both our companies can support each other to share the knowledge he has combined and made available to the public, with our practical training solution’s. For us to duplicate this great work Daniel has already achieved would be counterproductive. So we use DSDWEB as our go to training guide for written answers for qualifications from the care certificate to NVQ lvl5

DSDWeb is “the UK’s premier resource for free study guides in the health and social care sector.” DSDWeb’s aim is to assist those doing a qualification to have access to knowledge, skills and understanding of the care workforce. As care assistants who have undertaken NVQ’s within the work place we have personally used this site for research and answers to questions. It is easy to navigate and clearly laid out to assist you in your answer search.

We recommend all Nightingales undertaking our training to use this free study guide site for all your written answers.

Speaking Up

If you are already a healthcare assistant you would have heard the term ‘speaking up‘ if you are not yet a healthcare assistant but are considering the role then we advise you to read this. As a healthcare assistant you have a duty of care for everyone within the care setting and environment you are working in. Recognizing the signs and types of abuse and bullying is vital, not only to protect the individual service user but also to protect yourself, your team of work colleges, visitors and external providers, for example: chiropodist, hair dressers or even delivery drivers.

You would assume the phrase  Speaking Up meant that you could verbally tell your grievances to another and it will be acted upon, unfortunately this is not the case with the majority of care providers. There is a process one must take, a process that can be mentally and physically draining, our aim is to be honest with you to the best of our knowledge to give you a better chance of being able to prepare yourself  for the journey you are about to embark on. The times to speak up are when you suspect any of the following:

Physical abuse involving contact planned to cause bodily harm, feelings of intimidation, other physical suffering or injury.

In our experience the most common explanation for “unexplained” bruising is poor manual handling. Training is very poor and not realistic, training is normally done on each other using staff on duty, which can be a health care assistant, housekeeper or anyone on duty that day, which means it’s taught without any realistic scenarios. practicing on each comes with no obstacles: the obstacles that we would normally face day to day in our job roles, for example: someone who is obese, someone who is a non responsive or resistant, someone who is showing signs of delirium, these things along with lack of confidence due to poor training and staff shortages and being faced with a scene they have not been trained for cause healthcare assistants to make poor manual handling choices which can result in injury too the service user and ones self. However this should always be reported and documented.

Sexual abuse is the forcing of undesired sexual behaviour by one person upon another.

Emotional/Psychological abuse may involve threats or actions to cause mental or physical harm; humiliation; violation

If you have spoken to anyone in this manor there is no excuse for it, if you are struggling with stress which you feel has let to such extreme outbursts we advise you to speak to your employer, be honest about how you are feeling and behaving and step down from your duty of care until you feel you are safe to return. We also advise you to speak to your GP if stress levels continue.

Financial abuse is the illegal or unauthorized use of a person’s money, property, pension book or other valuable

Individuals being forced into a life of slavery, human trafficking, domestic servitude or forced labour.

Individuals being treated differently due to personal traits such as age, gender, race, sexual orientation etc.

Institutional abuse involves failure of an organisation to provide appropriate and professional individual services to vulnerable people. It can be seen or detected in processes, attitudes and behavior that amount to discrimination through unwitting prejudice, ignorance, thoughtlessness, stereotyping and rigid systems.

Neglect is a passive form of abuse in which the wrongdoer is responsible to provide care, for someone, who is unable to care for oneself, but fails to provide adequate care to meet their needs. Neglect may include failing to provide sufficient supervision, nourishment, medical care or other needs

Something as simple as brushing teeth. Our personal experience has been that some staff lack confidence in this task, they felt uncomfortable as its quite invasive and in someone’s personal space, others stated they forgot due to the high demand of calls they receive and felt rushed when delivering personal care. This however is something we hope to change by raising awareness and educating  on the importance of this task. A service users oral hygiene needs should be documented in their care plan on arrival, this should be clear information and available for all involved in delivering personal care.

Self-neglect is a behavioural condition in which an individual neglects to attend to their basic needs, such as personal hygiene, feeding, clothing, or medical conditions they might have.

  • If you have witnessed any of these cases you must begin the process of documenting. In the care plan, skin chart, do a body map, take photos. The moment it is documented it has been logged on legal paperwork that will stand up in court. Do not dismiss any misconduct and not report it for any reason, these documents are the only time line available to family, police, solicitors, judges and any other professionals they may be involved.
  • Only ever report the facts you know of, never make assumptions or falsify documentation. 
  • Report to your line manager, team leader or home manager, depending on your care setting. Make a phone call and follow up with an email to the recipient keep a paper trail of events.
Please be aware: one of these signs doesn’t always mean abuse, but should always be reported and investigated by your line manager.
